I have wondered as of late why there was the sound of a rushing wind on the Day of Pentecost in the book of Acts. Really, it could have been an earthquake that occured, or perhaps an eclipse, but why did God choose the sound of wind?

I believe that as with Adam, God was breathing life into His body, the church, so that it would be a living thing, and be fruitful and mulitply. So powerful was His breath on them that they were empowered to be witnesses for Him, and we still are affected by that breath today!

Oh God, breathe afresh on us!

My life is Yours

Twenty years ago while working and minding my own business, God interrupted my life. I had steady employment and was attending a local university, and had my own agenda of where I wanted my life to go. I was actively involved in my church as well as a youth group at another church. Life was good and it was fun. Right in the middle of all that, God began to impress the name of a Bible college on my heart. At that same time, one of the managers at the store where I worked offered me to go into the management program. At 22 years of age, that was appealing, and the pay was three times what I was making at the time. Decisions, decisions . . .

I decided to go to my pastor, Rev. Gary Heffler, to ask what I should do. I presented my options to him, to which he promptly replied – “You know what you should do.” At the moment, I thought – “You’re alot of help. Thanks so much” (with a sarcastic tone). But the more I thought about it, the more I knew he was right. And so with my 85 Chevy Cavalier, I trudged off to Florida. I faced some challenges, but was kept me there was I knew He had called me, and that was enough.

So here I am, twenty years later, and I still say – “God, You called me, and that’s enough. My life is yours.”

If you are questioning your call to the ministry, or you are facing challenges that seem insurmountable, I want to encourage you today with the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:24 – “²⁴ The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.” (NIV)

Help for Haiti

What an incredible day in church! The great people of Pitcairn Assembly of God were able to raise over $800 for Convoy of Hope to minister to the folks in Haiti. They have had a presence there, and were able to hit the ground running in meeting the needs of people there.

I know God’s blessing will meet those who gave in prayer and of their finances – it’s a promise in God’s Word!

Spiritual Platitudes

Every week I get the opportunity to speak to a fantastic group of people that God has entrusted to my leadership. One day I will stand before God and answer to Him for how I led His people, and did I do His will. While this is an awesome responsibility, it is also an awesome opportunity.

It is imperative that those times that I break open the Word of God – that is is presented in a relevant, Biblically solid, and powerful way - in order to have it’s desired effect. One man said this – “If we take the simple and make it profound, it’s effect will be simple. If we take the profound and make it simple, it’s effect will be profound.” Truly, how profound it is that God would send Jesus to pay the price for our sins, and that further He would go to prepare a place for us to spend eternity with Him.

I am still grasping that one!
